QUEEN CREEK, Ariz.—The Queen Creek High School baseball team has already started its season and are taking off from where it left off last season.
Under first-year head coach Mikel Moreno, the Dogs finished the 2017 season with 24 wins and just five losses. At 11-4 in the region, QC also won the region regular-season championship.
In just its first five games this season, the team has already outscored its opponents 39-6.
The Dogs return many of their players from last year and are expecting juniors Ryan Dobbs and Danny Marshall to lead the way. Sophomore Jacob Berry is returning for the Dogs and he hit .354 with 24 RBI in his freshman season. Seniors Kevon Jackson and Colton Cassinelli are also returning from successful junior years, each hitting over .300 with 17 and 22 RBI, respectively.
Head coach Moreno said his team is very young and not as experienced as last year, having lost nine seniors from the roster, but they are hardworking.
“Our goals are always the same,” said Moreno. “We want to compete and execute to the best of our ability.”
Marshall returns as QC’s most experienced pitcher and will be joined by among others newcomer Nomar Bustamante.
The Dogs will play next at Sunnyslope later today against Chaparral at 3:45 p.m. They will start region play on March 29 at Mesquite at 4 p.m.
