The girls soccer team played in its first-round state playoff game Tuesday night against no. 5-ranked Cienega, hoping to pull off the upset and advance.
Seeded at no. 12, QC had already won the play-in game last week to advance to the 16-team bracket. On Tuesday they had to beat a Cienega team who only had two losses in the regular season.
The first half ended in a scoreless deadlock.
“It was a very physical game with four yellow cards and three injuries,” said head coach Abel Corral. “Defensively, GK Olivia Kempf came up with some big saves.”
Ten minutes into the second half, QC finally found an opening and put itself on the board. Sophomore Sophia Serna scored her 19th goal of the season on an assist from senior Alexis Riley.
Kempf played a vital role in the team’s defense, blocking a penalty kick to keep her team in contention.
The Dogs played out the rest of the second half on top and pulled off the 1-0 upset to advance to the second round for the second year in a row.
The team will travel next to high seed no. 4 Arcadia on Saturday for a matchup scheduled for 2 p.m. The semifinals and finals will be played at Campo Verde next Thursday and Saturday.
