Boys basketball starts season strong

QUEEN CREEK, AZ--The Queen Creek High School boys basketball team is off to a fast start to its 2017-18 season.

The boys started their season just before Thanksgiving in the Give Thanks Thanksgiving Tournament, going 2-1 and making it into the championship game of the tournament. The Dogs also beat 6A Basha in their home opener on Tuesday.

The team lost six seniors from last year's roster and with only two returning starters, has a competitive team with multiple players fighting for starting positions.

"Competition will be tough in practices and playing time will be earned," said head coach Troy Gibson. "I am confident we will have players that will accept and excel at their role. Time will only tell who these guys will be."

Returning starters Jacob Botello and Tyler Fulton have the most experience on this year's team, but the roster is upperclassmen heavy with eight seniors and two juniors on the 12-man roster.

"We have a team that doesn't have a lot of real varsity basketball experience so our players are going to have to elevate their game and play and make decisions much faster than in previous years," said Gibson. "We want to improve every day. Our players have worked hard this off-season in class and in the weight room. I know they are willing to work hard and give us the best chance of having success this season. I feel that we will have good depth at every position and we will have nine guys that we feel comfortable putting in at any time"

In the San Tan Region in 5A, Queen Creek will play six out of the top 10 teams in 5A this year and their schedule will be in the top five as far as difficulty again this season.

"We want to play hard and be great teammates to each other," said Gibson. "We plan on competing for a regional championship and making it to the state tournament. We are hoping to avoid any injuries and distractions along our journey and to be playing our best basketball at the end of the year."

The next home game is tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 30 against Maricopa. The full schedule can be seen at
