Tucson, AZ—Junior boys golfer Gabe Salvanera brought home Queen Creek High School’s first individual state championship in golf Tuesday, shooting a two-day total of six-under par.
Coming into day two of the tournament, Salvanera found himself in a three-way tie for first and six more golfers were within striking distance of the podium. Gabe scored a 71 in round one, two-under par, but felt the pressure coming.
On day two, the lead changed often as a total 16 golfers were within three strokes of each other. Salvanera birdied on three of his four last holes to secure the win, but wasn’t quite sure if he’d done enough. He stuck around the golf course for a little more practice on the driving range in case a playoff was inevitable to determine the winner.
“I played loose and confident and I knew I was in a good position, but it got more stressful during the day,” Salvanera explained on the AIA website. “I felt it wasn’t over when I was done so I went to the driving range to prepare until my friend ran over and told me I had it.”
Salvanera ended day two shooting a 66, just one shot ahead of Brophy standout Tony Hendricks.
